Growing Up Roman

Picture
*The households in Rome were large, including all unmarried children, married sons, dependent relatives, and slaves; the relationships between family members were very good.

*The father had the power of the household, carrying out religious tasks, managing property, and educating his sons.

*Legal rights were scarce for women, but they were better for wives than they were for unmarried women.

*Wealthy women occasionally would acquire their own property or business.  Wealthy women were able to do more things like study Greek literature, arts, and fashion because they had slaves to do their work.

*Lower class women did not have slaves to do work for them, so they spent the majority of their time in the house or in the family-run shops.

*Roman children lived structured, firm lifestyles.  They had to be completely loyal to their families.

*Boys learned from their fathers and mothers taught their daughters.
